A LEAF FROM JOHN JOHNSON’S TYPOGRAPHIA

Pasadena, California: The Zamorano Club, 1982. First edition. Soft cover. Limited to 200 copies. A special keepsake presented to members of the Zamorano and Roxburghe Clubs on the occasion of their joint meeting in Los Angeles in October 1982, containing a tipped-in leaf from the first edition of John Johnson's Typographia (two volumes, 1824). One of a long line of printers' manuals that begins with Joseph Moxon's manual of 1683 and ends with Theodore DeVinne's four volumes that appeared between 1900 and 1904, Johnson's Typographia was equal parts history and practical manual, and contains what is considered one of the fullest treatments of the origins of printing, complete with biographies of the leading printers of England from William Caxton to the close of the 17th century. Staple-bound in blue paper wrappers, with a printed paper title label on the front. A fine copy. Fine. Item #998421207
