POPPING THE QUESTION: A New Game "As Old as the Hills." For Just Two, - U and I.
Boston: Adams & Co., 1868. Complete with 30 blue and 30 plain cards in a two-part stiff paper box. The box is a bit worn along the edges, with a split at the upper right corner. Overall, very good with the printed label intact and the cards still fresh and bright.
Explicitly marriage-focused, rather than an "icebreaker". The printed label mounted under the lid begrudgingly gives instructions in a way that applies to the staid, forced coyness of courtship itself: "This Game is so old, and 'hot to play it' seems to be so apparent, that any 'directions' appear uncalled for. But as it is customary to give them, we do so."
A rare game with a clever nod to spelling reform. Not in OCLC. The American Antiquarian Society trade directory notes the firm was active from 1866 to 1876. AAS holds: The New and Elegant Parlor Game of Oliver Twist; The Most Laughable Things on Earth (1865); Komical Konversation Kards (1866); The Celebrated Pigeon-tail Puzzles (1867); and Forced Confession (1869).
