Marryat (1792-1848) was a naval officer and the first important English novelist after Tobias Smollett to make full and amusing use of his varied experience at sea. Small octavo, eleven volumes, each with the frontispiece with tissue guard, a steel engraving by J.C. Buttre. In the publisher's green horizontal dotted-ribbed cloth bindings, with black-stamped ruled borders, looped rope surrounds with knotwork devices, gilt-stamped star device, arched surround with floral ornaments, and ornamental bands with titling on the front panel; black and gilt-stamped ornamental and rope bands, gilt-stamped ornaments and bands with titling on the spine; and a repetition of the black-stamped decorations from the front panel on the rear, except executed in blind-stamp. Moderate foxing to some of the frontispieces, tissue guards, and opposing leaves, with mild staining to the spine heel of three volumes. Thin bookplate to each front flyleaf. Some general dust staining to the top edges. Negligible rubbing to the corners and tips, with a little bit of toning along the spines; otherwise very good.
