Born at Beggar's Bush, Dublin, Ireland, John Ross Browne (1821-75) emigrated to America in 1833 and following a sporadic education, established himself as a journalist, travel writer, humorist, agent of the Treasury Department, mining authority, minister to China, and ardent Californian. This work describes his travels through Russia, Scandinavia, and Iceland in the early 1860s, prior to his return to the American West. Small octavo: 542, [10, ads] pp. with numerous illustrations by the author. Original green cloth binding, with gilt-stamped titling and borders, and blind-stamped borders and emblems.
