GOES SELLING HELPS: Lithographed and Steel-Litho Stock Certificates

Chicago: Goes Lithographing Company, circa 1950. Wraps. Oblong sample book (16 ½” x 10”) containing 96 stock specimens. Original printed cardstock covers, bound with two brads and a cloth tape spine, with tabbed sections.

The company, now based in Wisconsin and still in operation today, was founded in 1881 by Indiana-native Charles B. Goes (1855-1910). In 1884, the first stock certificate blanks were published and became the foundation for all Goes Stock Lines sold to printers, stationers, and office suppliers. The line features detailed vignettes depicting patriotic eagles and industry themed illustrations such as agriculture, oil drilling, and mining ventures. One stock image suggests the Atomic Age with the nuclear symbol in the foreground of a modern cityscape with a jet flying through the skies.

This sample book is an important piece of printing history. It appears a few of the stock samples have been removed, and one stock sample is torn. Some fraying to the spine and light foxing to a few of the specimens, which are otherwise in very good condition. Very good. Item #80410
