Like many of the author's early works, this book is set in Ireland and blends engaging narrative storytelling with strong moral and religious lessons designed for young readers. Bunbury (1802-82) is best remembered for her the narratives based on her extensive travels throughout Europe, including The Pyrenees (1845), A Summer in Northern Europe (1856), and Russia After the War (1857). Printed by J. Ritchie in Edinburgh. 12mo: 179, [1, ads] pp. with the frontispiece, an engraving with tissue guard, by J. & J. Johnstone. In the publisher's purple roan binding, with overall embossed and machine-ruled patterns with an oval within a circle and arched panels on the front and rear panels, and embossed bands and machine-ruled patterns, and gilt-stamped titling on the spine. All edges spattered in red and gray, with dark cream coated endpapers. Period ownership signature along the top edge of the title page. Just a hint of edgewear; else an exquisite example.
