COLUMBIA RECORDS & SHOOTING STAR PICTURES proudly present JERMAINE DUPRI & JAY-Z: "Money Ain't a Thang"

Original production book for the music video of "Money Ain't a Thang" (1998), the Grammy-nominated single featuring Jay-Z from Jermaine Dupri's debut studio album, Life in 1472.

Includes the personnel with contact information, a shot list and schedule, locations with driving directions and maps, crew, vendors, and a calendar for the shoot, which took place in Thousand Oaks, the Santa Monica Mountains, and Malibu on May 27-29, 1998. Photomechanically reproduced on the recto of 25 sheets of standard 8 1/2" x 11" white stock and bound with a staple in the upper left corner. One leaf is torn out near the corner and neatly laid in place. Some mild evidence of handling, with a name written in pencil on the front panel; otherwise very good.

1998's summer anthem, "Money Ain't a Thang" bridged the East Coast (Jay-Z) and South (Dupri) hip-hop scenes during a time of elevated regional tensions. Solidifying the "flossing" aesthetic (flaunting wealth), it also played a pivotal role in Hova's ascendency to the top of the genre:

"Although neither artist was new to flossing, the merging markets they were approaching had never seen or heard something so authentically aspirational and glossy before. For both Jay and Jermaine, they found themselves trying something new and winning handsomely. From racing horses with Real Housewives to taunting Baywatch babes with bags of Benjamins, the ballers in baseball jerseys proved stunting was not a habit but rather a sport. America’s Game, capitalism, belonged to the two titans and rap radio would never be the same" (Ian Stonebrook, "The Business Behind 'Money Ain't a Thang" for Boardroom).

The song, which was produced by Dupri, who samples "Weak at the Knees" by Steve Arrington for the track's beat, also appears as a bonus track on Jay-Z's seminal third studio album, Vol. 2... Hard Knock Life (1998). Item #80223
