A work on Alsatian Jews and their customs, written by the Jewish Orientalist David Léon Cahun (1841-1900). Quarto: [iv], iv, 114 pp. with 6 full-page plates, all mezzotints on handmade paper, after Alphonse Lévy; 7 full-page plates, and numerous text illustrations and vignette, all photolithographs or photo-process wood engravings after Alphonse Lévy; and 2 preface illustrations, photo-process wood engravings by Rougeron-Vignerot after Raphael Poggi. The title page is printed in red and black. In the publisher's white paper-covered thin boards, with chromolithograph Islamic manuscript design of calligraphic page printed in black, gray, yellow, light green, red, violet, and red, with ruled surround printed in black, red, green and gold, on brown-printed mottled background, brown, red, and black-printed trompe l’oeil ribbon and publisher’s monogram device wax seal, red and black-printed Hebrew titling, and black and gold-printed stylized titling on the front panel; chromolithograph ornamental bands and panels printed in black, yellow, green, red, and gold on brown-printed mottled background, and red and black-printing titling on the spine; chromolithograph repeating calligraphic page, surround and background from the front, except with central ornamental device with publisher's motto and monogram printed in black, yellow, red, and gold on the rear panel; and brown coated endpapers. Some minor toning and wear along the extremities; otherwise very good. Housed in a custom cloth clamshell box with a gilt-stamped leather spine label.
