Accounts of various shrines and holy sites throughout England, including the birthplace of John Bunyan, the printing office of Thomas Caxton, the prison of Lady Jane Grey, the tomb of William Hogarth, and the grave of Izaak Walton. Hall (1800-81) provides a detailed description of the history and significance of the site, as well as her personal experiences and impressions of the pilgrimage. Octavo, two volumes: xii, 294, [2, ads] pp. with 91 wood engravings + xii, 294, [18, ads] pp. with 79 wood engravings. In the publisher's dark blue morocco-grain cloth bindings designed by William Harry Rogers, with blind-stamped ivy and branch borders, and gilt-stamped holly wreath around decorative titling on the front and rear panels, and gilt-stamped entwined ivy and holly vine decorations, forming titling compartments on the spines. All edges gilt, with cream and pale peach coated endpapers, respectively. Tiny bit of foxing to the prefatory leaves in the second volume, with a period presentation inscription dated 1852 to the front flyleaf in the first volume. The bindings are remarkably fresh, with some mild wear to the corners and tips. Better than very good. Provenance: from the Publishers' Bookbindings collection of Ellen K. Morris and Edward S. Levin.
