The only issue in this series, featuring contributions by Washington Irving, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Bayard Taylor, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, etc. Tall octavo: 288 pp. with the portrait frontispiece and 11 full-page plates, all steel engravings with tissue guards, by J.C. Buttre, Capewell & Kimmel, W.G. Jackman, J. Rogers, H.W. Smith, R. Soper, and E. Teel, after Bell Hughes, C.L. Elliott, Matthew Brady, Johnson, et al. In the publisher's black morocco binding, with gilt-stamped ruled borders, ornamental and geometric strapwork surround, ornamental oval surround and floral ornamental panel with titling on the front and rear panels, and gilt-stamped ornamental borders and geometric strapwork, and decorative shield with titling on the spine. All edges gilt, with pale cream coated endpapers. Occasional light foxing, with a faint stain to the very bottom corner of the text block. The endpapers are oxidized.
