PERSONAL REMINISCENCES OF HENRY IRVING

New York: The Macmillan Company, 1906. First Edition. Hardcover. During his lifetime, Bram Stoker (1847-1912) was best known not as the author of Dracula (1897) but instead as the the personal assistant of actor Henry Irving (1838-1905) and the business manager of the West End's Lyceum Theatre, which Irving owned. The two had a working relationship that lasted almost thirty years: Irving provided the star power and the driving force, Bram a bottomless well of loyalty and the administrative capability to keep the show on the road. This affectionate memoir chronicles Irving's rise to fame, his acting methodology, and his influence on Victorian theater. Octavo, two volumes: xiii, [1], 372 pp. + vii, [1], 385, [1] pp. with frontispiece portraits, one in color, as well as 32 plates and 2 facsimiles. Original red cloth bindings, with gilt-stamped titling, borders, and silhouette of Henry Irving. The hinges of the first volume are neatly repaired. Some mild toning to the spines, with a bit of rubbing to the corners and tips; otherwise very good. Very good. Item #80078
