Bound by Leighton, Son & Hodge: London, with their ticket to the rear pastedown. Octavo: xiv, [2], 250, [6, ads] pp. with a frontispiece with tissue guard and 12 textual illustrations, all wood engravings by Dalziel Brothers, after Edward Dalziel, Thomas Dalziel, A.B. Houghton, G.J. Pinwell, W. Small, Josef Wolf, and J.B. Zwecker. In the publisher's red sand-grain cloth binding, with beveled boards; blue sand-grain cloth onlays, gilt-stamped ornamental borders, blind-stamped ornamental surround, and gilt-stamped and over-stamped ornamental titling bands, and titling on each board; and blue sand-grain cloth onlays, gilt-stamped and over-stamped ornamental bands, and titling on the spine. All edges gilt, with buff coated endpapers. Tiny bit of foxing to the prefatory and concluding leaves, with a period ink gift inscription to the front flyleaf. The binding is uncommonly clean and bright, with just a hint of edgewear. Better than very good. Provenance: from the Publishers' Bookbindings collection of Ellen K. Morris and Edward S. Levin.
