Stearns (born Harold Edmund Doyle, 1891-1943), a noted author, critic, and foreign correspondent, abandoned a promising journalism career in the United States in the early 1920s and spent thirteen years living among the "Lost Generation" in Paris. Often called America's foremost expatriate, he returned in U.S. in 1932 and wrote Rediscovering America (1934), "a book in which he found much good in this country and expressed a vague regret that he ever left it" (New York Times).
