THE POETICAL WORKS OF THOMAS GRAY, ENGLISH AND LATIN. Edited by The Rev. John Moultrie, M.A.
Eton and London: E.P. Williams, 1854. Fifth Edition. Hardcover. Gray (1716-71) was an English poet whose “An Elegy Written in a Country Church Yard” is one of the best known of English lyric poems. Although his literary output was slight, he was the dominant poetic figure in the mid-18th century and a precursor of the Romantic movement. Octavo: vi, [2], c, 142, [2] pp. with the engraved frontispiece, engraved extra title page, and 13 plates after drawings by Charles W. Radclyffe. In an exquisite full brown calf binding, with a gilt-stamped rendering of an English church on the front panel, a gilt-stamped rendering of a gravestone on the rear panel, five raised bands, gilt-stamped titling, borders, ornamentation, and floral dentelles, and marbled endpapers and edges. Presentation inscription by George Richard Dupuis (1835-1912), the English schoolmaster and noted cricketer, to a departing Eton student on the prefatory blank leaf. Just a hint of foxing to the contents, with a little bit of scuffing to the rear board; otherwise very good. Very good. Item #79654
