THE WITCH-CULT IN WESTERN EUROPE: A Study in Anthropology
Oxford: at the Clarendon Press, Oxford University, 1921. First Edition. Hardcover. The scarce first edition of this influential academic study, which suggests that the accusations made towards "witches" in Europe were in fact based on a real, though clandestine, pagan religion that worshipped a horned god. The writer H.P. Lovecraft read the book shortly after its release and directly references it in his short story, "The Call of Cthulhu" (1926). Notably, it includes an appendix listing the "names of witches in covens", among them individuals associated with the 1440 Machecoul and 1662 Auldearne trials, and the earlier 1324 Kilkenny case. Octavo: 303, [1] pp. Original green cloth binding, with gilt-stamped titling. Partially unopened. Ink notation to the front flyleaf. Some minor edgewear to the boards; otherwise very good. Very good.
