Long a standard authority on the subject, this book established a direct connection between the impoverishment of the poor and epidemic fever. Smith (1788-1861), an English physician and sanitary reformer, has been described as "the intellectual father of the public health movement". Octavo: 326, [2, blank], [8, ads] pp. Contemporary full calf binding, with a black leather spine label and gilt-stamped titling and borders. An ex-library copy, with a numeric stamp to the first page of the text, an embossed stamp to a prefatory blank leaf, a bookplate and brief inscription to the front flyleaf, and some offsetting where a paper label was on the spine heel. The ink stamp of another previous owner appears on the front endpaper. Some general edgewear to the boards, largely at the corners and tips. Good. Item #79421
