Born in Oxfordshire, Adams (1793-1873) published more than ten books for children and was the mother of novelist Charles Warren Adams. Small octavo: 415, [1], [16, ads] pp. with the frontispiece with tissue guard and 6 full-page plates, all wood engravings by Whitney Jocelyn and Mann, after John Gilbert. In the publisher's black morocco-grain cloth binding, with blind-stamped borders and central lobed oval panel with scalloped surround on the front and rear panels, and gilt-stamped floral and knotwork surrounds for a vignette of a boy on horseback, and titling on the spine. An exceptionally clean example, with just a hint of rubbing to the extremities. Provenance: from the Publishers' Bookbindings collection of Ellen K. Morris and Edward S. Levin. Item #79310
