Octavo: xx, 422 pp. with a frontispiece with tissue guard, a fine mezzotint by C.H. Jeens after a drawing, as well as 30 full-page plates, all mounted original albumen photographs, 8 full-page plates and 43 textual illustrations, all wood engravings by Jewitt & Co., J. Kirchner, W.M.R. Quick, Percy Roberts, et al., after illustrations by P.H. Delamotte. In the publisher's vellum over vellum boards, with gilt-stamped ruled and floral ornamental borders and frame with floral ornamental infill, and central fleur-de-lis device on the front panel; gilt-stamped ruled and floral ornamental bands, floral ornamental compartments, and titling on the spine; and a repetition of the front panel on the rear, except without the fleur-de-lis device. All edges gilt, with ornamental dentelles, patterned endpapers, and a light blue silk ribbon. The binder's ticket (Giulio Giannini: Florence) appears on the verso of the front flyleaf. Just a hint of foxing to the prefatory and concluding leaves. Some light soiling to the vellum; else very good or better. Provenance: from the Publishers' Bookbindings collection of Ellen K.
