Zurich: Johann Heinrich Hamberger, 1647-1649. First Edition. Hardcover. Thick octavo, three volumes in one: [28], 279, [1], [4], 312, [12], 482 pp. with the decorative title pages and 6 engraved plates. Period full vellum binding, with yapp edges and all edges stained black. Occasional mild foxing and toning. Period previous owner’s ink signature to a prefatory blank leaf, with a tiny ink stamp to the front pastedown. Some general soiling and scuffing to the vellum; else very good.

Hottinger (1620-67) was a Swiss Reformed theologian and philologist. He served as Professor of Church History, Oriental Languages, and Rhetoric at Zurich (1642-55), and later as Rector of the same (1661-67), with a brief stay in Heidelberg as Professor of Oriental Languages (1655-61). In this major work (The Christian Non-Partisan Signpost), he affirms that the true Catholic Faith aligns with the teachings of the early Apostolic Church. Notably, he is also critical of the Greek Orthodox Church for not translating the Gospel into the vernacular. The six plates included in the third volume, which range from the allegorical to the grotesque, suggest damnation awaits clergy who lead lives of decadence and depravity. Very good. Item #79257
