Largely self-taught, Jerome (1858-1945) first attracted public attention in 1882 with a series of eighteen sketches of Colorado scenery, which was followed by this elegantly illustrated selection of poetry, song, and aphorisms. Oblong quarto: unpaginated with pictorial frontispiece and full-page pictorial vignettes, all photo-process wood engravings after illustrations by Irene E. Jerome. In the publisher's brown morocco binding, with dark-brown-stamped floral ornamental surround and gilt-stamped decorative titling on the front panel; five raised bands, dark brown-stamped bands and compartment ornaments, and gilt-stamped titling on the spine; and a repetition of the ornamental surround on the rear panel. All edges gilt, with gilt-stamped dentelles and marbled endpapers. Light rubbing to the corners and tips; else fine. Provenance: from the Publishers' Bookbindings collection of Ellen K.
