LES CRIMES DES PAPES, depuis Saint Pierre jusqu’a Pie VI

Paris: Lemoine, Libraire, 1830. Wraps. Second edition, originally published in 1792. This is the wrappers issue, for use as is or for rebinding. The French politician Louis-Charles de Lavicomterie (1746-1809) made a name for himself by publishing a series of sensational works inspired by revolutionary ideals, including Les crimes des rois de France depuis Clovis jusqu'à Louis XVI (1791) and this follow-up, which examined the transgressions of the popes from Saint Peter to Pius VI. 24mo, two volumes: [iv], 323 pp. + [iv], 286 pp. with copper-engraved frontispieces. A rare survivor, with buff endpapers from surplus sheets of engraved pharmaceutical labels ("Aubergeon, Pharmacien : Rue de Cleres, à Grenoble"). In the original pale blue variegated paper wrappers, with black-printed ruled and floral ornamental borders and titles, with the publisher's advertisements on the rear panels. Mild toning to the contents, with an occasional bit of foxing. The spines are a touch faded; else very good. Housed in a custom cloth clamshell box with a gilt-stamped blue morocco spine label. Provenance: from the Publishers' Bookbindings collection of Ellen K. Morris and Edward S. Levin. Very good. Item #78841
