NAMESLETTER: The Names Project Newsletter, Vol. 1, No. 1
San Francisco: The Names Project, December 1987. Printed in black with spot color on both sides of an 11” x 17” sheet, which folds to 8 ½” x 11” (four panels). Light horizontal creases, presumably for mailing, with some faint toning along the extremities.
The first issue of the quarterly newsletter produced by The Names Project, a non-profit organization in support of the AIDS Memorial Quilt to celebrate the lives of people who died of AIDS-related causes. The quilt was conceived in 1985, during the early years of the AIDS pandemic, when social stigma prevented many AIDS victims from receiving funerals. The project continues today, and the quilt contains more than 50,000 panels, which have now been digitized and can be viewed online.
The first issue of this quarterly print newsletter was a vehicle for helping to fundraise for a national tour of the quilt and to support the creation of local chapters.
