THE AMULET. A Christian and Literary Remembrancer.
London: Frederick Wesley and A.H. Davis, 1833. First Edition. Hardcover. From the library of Princess Louise of Prussia (1808-70), a princess of the Netherlands as the wife of Prince Frederick, with her ink stamp to the title page. The Amulet was first published in 1826, and over time, it found itself alongside the pre-eminent annuals of the period. It began as a religious annual; the quality of the works and the notoriety of its editor, Samuel Carter Hall (1800-89), who was entrenched in the literary world, helped to insure its success. 12mo: [iv], 312, [2], [5, ads] pp. with a frontispiece, extra title page vignette, and 10 plates, all steel engravings with tissue guards. In the publisher's black morocco binding, with blind-stamped ruled borders, gilt-stamped rules and titling, and cream coated endpapers. All edges gilt. Tiny binder's ticket (F. Westley, London) to the front pastedown. Tiny bit of rubbing along the extremities; else near fine. Provenance: from the Publishers' Bookbindings collection of Ellen K. Morris and Edward S. Levin.
