THE COMMUNITY COOKBOOK OF MONTEREY PARK, CALIFORNIA: Volume I
Monterey Park, California: The Community Relations Commission of Monterey Park, 1972. First Edition. Spiral bound. “…a collection of recipes of many lands from the many peoples living together happily in the beautiful city of Monterey Park, California. This little town of 50,000 people represents a living example of a group of people whose differences are regarded as precious assets to be kept alive.” Each recipe is credited to the local resident who submitted it, and organized into one of four categories: appetizers, soups, and salads; main courses and casseroles; drinks and desserts; and specialties. Includes instructions for preparing beef sukiyaki, sweet and sour chicken, lumpia, Indonesian shrimp in coconut sauce, red beans and rice, albondigas, etc.
Known as the first suburban Chinatown, Monterey Park would spearhead massive demographic changes across Southern California in the 1970s. By the 1990 census, the community located about seven miles east od downtown Los Angeles became the first city with an Asian descent majority population in the continental United States.
