THE SCARLET LETTER, A ROMANCE
Boston: Ticknor, Reed, and Fields, 1850. First Edition. Hardcover. With the uncorrected textual errors ("reduplicate", et al), lacking the publisher's ads. The canonical American masterpiece of sin, guilt, and revenge. At once retrospective and radically new, The Scarlet Letter portrays seventeenth-century Puritan New England, a time period irreversibly encoded in the American identity. Small octavo: iv, 322 pp. In a three-quarter tan calf over marbled paper binding, with green and brown morocco spine labels, gilt-stamped titles and decorations, five raised bands, blind-stamped borders, and marbled edges and endpapers. The spine is darkened a touch, with some minor wear to the corners and tips; otherwise very good. Housed in a custom marbled paper-covered slipcase. BAL 7600. Very good. Item #78224
