IF THIS GOES ON: No. 1-3
Bethesda, Maryland: Colin Sears and Sharon Cheslow, 1982-1983. Three issues (8 1/2" x 11"), photomechanically reproduced and bound with staples.
The complete run of If This Goes On, featuring photographs, drawings, record reviews, and concert reports, as well as cartoons and short fiction. Issue 3 contains an early interview with Ian MacKaye of Minor Threat, who discusses his struggles with increasing fame. MacKaye, who went on to form the post-hardcore band Fugazi, is credited with coining the term "straight edge", a philosophy that promotes abstinence from alcohol and drugs, though MacKaye has stated that he did not intend to turn it into a movement.
One of the editors, Sharon Cheslow, formed Chalk Circle, Washington, D.C.'s first all-female punk band.
Washington, D.C. made a significant mark on the history of punk rock from the late 1970s to the early '90s, thanks to the development of the "harDCore" scene and the emergence of bands like Bad Brains, Teen Idles, Minor Threat, Youth Brigade, and Scream. The tradition of holding all ages shows at small D.I.Y. spaces has roots in the early D.C. straight edge movement and the idea that people of all ages should have access to music, regardless of the legal age to consume alcohol.
