Auburn, New York: John L. Ransom, 1881. First Edition. Hardcover. Ransom (1843-1919), an acting quartermaster sergeant for the 9th Michigan Cavalry, was captured on November 6, 1863, in east Tennessee and sent by train to Andersonville, a camp for Union prisoners of war in Sumter County, Georgia. Among the best-known Civil War narratives, his diary includes graphic descriptions of the camp's deplorable conditions and his own near-death experience.
