AESOP'S FABLES: A New Version, Chiefly from Original Sources, by The Rev. Thomas James, M.A.
London: John Murray, 1848. Hardcover. The scarce first John Tenniel edition, with more than one hundred illustrations. Lewis Carroll was so impressed by Tenniel’s animated designs for this edition of Aesop’s Fables that he chose the artist to illustrate Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865). Octavo: [xxv], [3], 221, [12, ads] pp. In the publisher's patterned tan cloth binding, with gilt-stamped titles and decorative blind-stamped borders. The binder's ticket appears on the rear pastedown. Occasional light foxing. Two ink gift inscriptions, the first dated 1852 and the second 1909, to the front flyleaf, with the small bookplate of noted book collector Anthony David Estill to the front pastedown. The spine is darkened, with a few minor stains to the cloth; else very good. Housed in a custom, felt-lined clamshell box. Very good. Item #77948
