Juliet Pollock (1819-99) was a novelist, accomplished watercolorist, and an expert on French drama and contemporary European literature. The Wellesley Index to periodicals lists 47 contributions by her, including this Victorial novel. Later, she collaborated on the novel The Seal of Fate (1891) with Walter Herries Pollock, her second son with Sir William Frederick Pollock. Octavo: 280 p. with a frontispiece engraving by F. Bacon after H. Richter. In the publisher's red pebble-grain cloth binding (T.E. Slate, London), with gilt-stamped titles and blind-stamped ornamental borders with floral corners and a central device. Period ink gift inscription to the front flyleaf. Light wear to the corners and tips; else very good or better. Scarce, OCLC locates only four holdings: British Library, Cambridge University, National Library of Scotland, and University of Texas, Austin. Very good. Item #77497
