SMALL ARCHIVE OF LONG SAULT ISLAND, NEW YORK PROPERY DEEDS

A collection of 14 deeds and other property documents concerning land in and around Long Sault Island in New York, dated between 1829 and 1955. These records appear to track the ownership and transfer of parcels which were ultimately purchased under eminent domain as a result of the construction of the Moses-Saunders Power Dam. In 1958, 58,000 acres of land between Iroquois and Cornwall were flooded. What remained is a group of 11 islands forming a chain from the hilltops of the inundated land, now connected by the Long Sault Parkway.

The documents show that among the property owners was Alexander H. Andrews, who was elected to the New York State Assembly in 1868 from St. Lawrence County representing the Third District. Along with property deeds, this collection includes Andrews' handwritten "certificate of election" along with a pass dated 1868 for the Ogdensburgh and Lake Champlain Railroad. Item #76901
