THE AFRONOMICAL WAY

Warsaw: Centrum Sztuki Wspó czesnej, 2005. Limited edition set of 43 vibrantly colored cards housed in a custom two-part box that together comprise artist Sanford Biggers’ explorations of identity, rituals, and iconography. This is No. 49 of 300 sets, signed by the artist inside the bottom tray of the box.

Divided into three sections: afronomix, fetico, and fides, the images offer moments of both intimacy and surrealism. Biggers defines the first section, afronomix, as the “Kemitic, the study of the corelationship between peoples of the African Diaspora, the cosmos, and time.” The second section, fetico, comes from Portuguese and Latin, meaning both “charm, sorcery” and “facticius ‘made by art.’” The final section, fides, comes from Latin: “trust, belief.” Together these photographic cards are meant to complicate identity and offer new perspectives and associations for established symbols.

Biggers (b.1970) is an interdisciplinary conceptual artist who works in film/video, installation, music, and performance. His work is characterized by meditation and improvisation, both of which can be enacted through interaction with the cards in this set. In 2023, Biggers received The Amistad Center's Spirit of Juneteenth Award, Morehouse College's Bennie Trailblazer Award, a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship, and he was elected to the National Academy of Design.
