THE SUFFRAGE COOK BOOK
Pittsburgh: Equal Franchise Federation of Western Pennsylvania, 1915. First Edition. Hardcover. One of the suffragists' most unlikely and effective weapons in their fight for the vote was the cookbook. By 1870, women were staging mammoth bazaars and fairs to raise funds for suffrage work. When "The Woman Suffrage Cook Book of 1886" was published; it was offered for sale at many of these gatherings. The Suffrage Cook Book offered here even contains recipes from such prominent supporters as Jane Addams, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Jack London, Lady Constance Lytton, Mary Roberts Rinehart, and Fanny Garrison Villard. Octavo: 244 pp. with 36 plates. Original blue cloth binding, with pictorial yellow stamping reproducing a silhouette of Uncle Sam holding the scales of justice in his right hand, and in his left hand holding a wheel with spokes named for each state that had granted women the right to vote. The front hinge is starting, but still quite sound. The spine is a touch faded, with a small stain to the bottom of the front panel and some minor edgewear; otherwise very good. Very good.
