New York: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1978. First Edition. Hardcover. Presentation copy, inscribed on the front flyleaf by the translator, Jean Sherman: “For Charlotte [Hyde], who introduced me to Anaïs, and without whose love and help my French would never have existed. With love, Jean, Sept, 24, 1978." It was Hyde, a tourism representative for Tahiti, New Caledonia, and the Hebrides, who helped Nin fulfill her lifelong dream of visiting Bali.

The first of Anaïs Nin’s adolescent diaries, covering the years 1914 through 1920, when she was age 11 through 17. A self-portrait of an innocent girl who is transformed, through her own inner strengths, into an enlightened young woman, it anticipates and informs much of her later work.
