NEW LIGHT ON THE EARLY HISTORY OF THE GREATER NORTHWEST: The Manuscript Journals of Alexander Henry, Fur Trader of the Northwest Company, and of David Thompson, Official Geographer and Explorer of the same Company, 1799-1814, Exploration and Adventure among the Indians on the Red, Saskatchewan, Missouri, and Columbia Rivers

New York: Francis P. Harper, 1897. First Edition. Hardcover. This is No. 366 of 1,000 copies printed on fine book paper, from a total edition of 1,100 copies. "The Coues edition described here is an entirely new and original work printed from the original manuscripts, and contains the authors' daily journals of travels, explorations, and adventures in the fur trade throughout the Northwest. The section of greatest interest here is pages 747-916 in Volume II, detailing Thompson's operations on the Upper Columbia and Spokane Rivers, and at Fort Astoria (George). His activities give credence to England's claims to the Oregon Territory. This set is considered by historians to be the most important contribution to Western history and exploration published in the twentieth century." Frontispiece, with the three folding maps and the folding legend sheet housed in the rear pocket of the third volume. Octavos, three volumes. Original green cloth bindings, with gilt titles. The rear hinge of the first volume is starting, while the rear hinge of the second volume is cracked (the bindings are still quite sound). Some mild, uneven fading to the cloth; else very good. The Washington Eighty-Nine 9. Very good. Item #75625
