MY FIRST HOLIDAY; or, Letters Home from Colorado, Utah, and California

Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1881. First Edition. Hardcover. Upon the advice of her physician, Ms. Dall headed west, focusing her eye (and pen) upon Salt Lake City and San Francisco, with particular attention to two subjects: polygamy as practiced by the Mormons, and the living conditions and treatment of the Chinese (both in Utah and in California). "Although subject to the usual discrepancies that come with such observations (personal tastes, religious preferences, etc.) several sections appear to be objective recordings of actual conditions. The descriptions of a Chinese play is quite different from usual accounts and great attention is given to details like dress and food" (Gladys C. Hansen and William F. Heintz, The Chinese in California: A Brief Bibliographic History, p.45). Octavo: 430 p. Original green cloth binding, with gilt titles and decorative endpapers. The top edge is dust stained, with a negligible bit of mottling to the bottom edge and the cloth. The spine is a touch darkened, with some minor wear to the corners and tips; else very good. Flake 2652, not in Cowan. Very good. Item #75622
