Unique in the vegetable kingdom for the characteristic structure of their leaves and for their peculiar manner of reproduction, the ferns form a separate order among plants, called the Filicales. The Fern Herbal describes and illustrates these plants, covering their habitat and distribution, culture, history, and use. Elfriede Martha Abbe (1919–2012) was an American sculptor, wood engraver, and botanical illustrator, often displaying nature and simple country living inspired by her Upstate New York home. A graduate of Cornell University, where she worked as an illustrator, Abbe created numerous hand-printed books, which she printed on a printing press in her studio. Quarto. "The paper is Strathmore Pastelle. The type faces are Goudy Deepdene Italic and Goudy Oldstyle and Italic. The illustrations are wood engravings printed from the original blocks, and drawings printed from metal plates. The design of the end papers is from frost crystals on a window pane. All the type was hand set, and the sheets were printed on a 10 x 15 Chandler and Price platen press, manually operated."
