The Monticola Club was established on April 20, 1912, by Philenda Spencer, whose battle to promote the rights of women went on for many years, culminating in the passage of the bill in 1911 allowing women the right to vote in California. Published around the time of her death in 1915, this community cookbook features an array of recipies contributed by the women of Susanville, a former logging and mining town in northeastern California. Includes instructions for preparing breads, cakes, candies, fish and oysters, pies, pickles and relishes, puddings, salads, sandwiches, soups, and vegetables, as well as dishes for invalids and Spanish dishes. In most cases, the contributor is identified. Octavo: 100 p. with [11] p. period advertisements. Original dark green cloth binding, with gilt titles.
