RUSTIC CANYON and the Story of the Uplifters

Santa Monica, California: Casa Vieja Press, 1975. First Edition. Hardcover. Illustrated history of Rustic Canyon, a fertile valley carved into the rugged slopes of the Santa Monica Mountains. The middle canyon was adopted in 1921 by the jolly band of the Uplifters, a select group of Los Angeles businessmen and professionals, including writer L. Frank Baum, who built a clubhouse, vacation cottages, and a polo field in their private enclave; invited actors and artists to contribute their talents; and were known for their yearly High Jinks. Includes discussion of efforts to preserve the remaining open spaces and the rustic character of the entire canyon. Quarto: 166 p. with numerous textual photographs, illustrations, and maps. Original charcoal gray cloth binding, with gilt titles. The top corners are a bit bumped; otherwise a very good copy, lacking the dust jacket. Very good. Item #75265
