SKETCHES OF TRAVELS IN SOUTH AMERICA, MEXICO AND CALIFORNIA

New York: James Egbert, Printer, 1860. First Edition. Hardcover. "According to [Dale] Morgan, Schaeffer originally contributed these sketches to a religious newspaper under the pen name 'Quartz.' Schaeffer's book has received the praise of many for providing a congenial, yet uninflated account of his three years in California. He left New York in the ship Flavius on March 24, 1849, and sailed around Cape Horn to San Francisco. Shortly thereafter, [he] visited Stockton, Sacramento, Rough and Ready, Grass Valley, Gold Run, and Downieville. He also participated in the Gold Lake expedition of 1850. Poor health caused him to take a cruise, and after recovering, he stayed in Grass Valley from December 29, 1850, until his departure on April 25, 1852. Like many others, he returned home via the Isthmus of Panama and arrived back in New York on May 25, 1852." 12mo: 247 p. In a three-quarter burgundy morocco over burgundy cloth binding, with decorative gilt stamping, five raised bands, and marbled endpapers. Faint stain to the top corner of the contents. The spine is moderately sun faded, with a bit of wear to the corners; otherwise very good. Kurutz, California Gold Rush 558. Very Good. Item #75211
