DIARY OF A MOTOR JOURNEY FROM CHICAGO TO LOS ANGELES, with Many Pen and Ink Sketches Made by the Author En Route

Los Angeles: Grafton Publishing Company, 1922. First Edition. Hardcover. From the Hotel Birchmont on Chicago’s North Shore to an oceanfront bungalow in Venice, California, McGill drove a total of 2,633 miles in 21 days, accompanied by his wife and daughter in a seven-passenger 1919 Wyllis Knight during October of 1921. His total expenses, including fuel, food and lodging were $235.77, and the cost of gasoline ranged from a low of 19 cents a gallon in Chicago to 50 cents a gallon in Springerville, Arizona. McGill’s nuts-and-bolts narrative, including a good, short chapter on car care, often seems to be at odds with his quick artful sketches which bring humor and a touch of irony to the text. A comparatively scarce but frequently cited work in the literature of early American motoring. Octavo: 95 p. with numerous drawings by the author. Original red cloth binding, with gilt titles. A very good copy. Autos Across America 41. Very good. Item #75202

Price: $125.00
