New York: George H. Doran Company, 1927. First Edition. Hardcover. Inscribed by George Abbott to Barrett H. Clark, the influential editor, critic, historian, lecturer, and literary manager, on the front flyleaf. A crime drama using contemporary street slang and a hard-boiled, realistic atmosphere to depict the New York City underworld during Prohibition, Broadway was a smash hit, running for 603 performances at the Broadhurst Theatre in New York. It was also Abbott's first big success on his way to becoming "the most famous play doctor of all time" after he "rejiggered" Dunning's play. Octavo. Original orange paper-covered boards over a black cloth spine, with printed paper title labels. Period bookseller's label to the rear pastedown, with some general dust staining to the top edge. Minor bumping to the corners. In the uncommon dust jacket, which is moderately toned, more so along the spine and folds, with a bit of light edgewear; otherwise very good. Very good / Very good.
