"Fernald was a prominent pioneer and cultural leader of Santa Barbara County, California, during the latter-half of the nineteenth century. He was a miner in the California gold rush, a self-taught lawyer, member of the California Bar at age twenty-two, and by age twenty-three had been sheriff, district attorney, and judge of Santa Barbara County."
