A RIDE THROUGH WONDERLAND

London: Sampson, Low, Marston & Co., 1892. First Edition. Hardcover. By the time Georgina Synge visited Yellowstone Park in the 1890s, most tourists sped through the park on rigorously-scheduled five-day coach tours. The English novelist and her husband, however, preferred the flexibility of traveling on horseback. Having their own steeds and tents allowed them to choose their route and after the visiting the geysers, the pair detoured into the back country in hopes of seeing big game. Synge’s lively account also describes the problems of outfitting for the trip in Salt Lake City with references to the Saints and discussion of vigilante justice in Montana.

Octavo: iv, 166 p. with a folding color map frontispiece and two plates. Original olive green cloth binding, with gilt titles and pictorial brown, black, and light green stamping. Partially unopened. The period ink signature of Carl August Giese appears on the verso of a concluding blank leaf, with his bookplate to the rear pastedown. Light rubbing to the corners and tips; else very good or better. Scarce. Very good. Item #74424
