PHOTO MOUNTING CORNERS COLLECTION
A unique collection of 30 different examples of photo mounting corners produced by a variety of American companies from the 1930s and ‘40s. Engel Corners staked its claim as “the original corner mounts” on its packaging: “Always be sure to get Engel Corners, the original corner mounts introduced by us in 1908.” As no history of mounting corners is known, we will have to take their word for it.
Fifteen of the examples in this group are photo mounting corners produced under the name NuAce, which were manufactured by the Ace Art Company of Reading, Massachusetts. The company, which is now defunct, produced the corners in a variety of colors, as well as a transparent model. They were inexpensive, sold in packs of 100 for 10 cents, and easy to use: “place a NuAce Mounting Corner on each corner of a print. Moisten glue and place on album page.” Newspaper reports show the company as a going concern well into the 1980s.
Other examples include Lartz Easy Mounts, which were offered in a variety of fancy cut shapes to beautify scrapbooks. The corners were manufactured at the Lartz Plant, located in Suring, Wisconsin, a village with a little over 500 residents. The Dennison Manufacturing Co., located in Framingham, Massachusetts, also dipped its toe into the photo corner business. The company, founded in 1844, first made jewelry boxes and expanded into Christmas stickers and tags. In 1990, Dennison merged with the Avery Corporation.
All of the photo mounting corner packages have been opened, with examples of the product remaining in each. The examples are housed in plastic sheets within a black three-ring binder, with two mounting corner packages housed in a plastic sleeve affixed to the front. A unique collection of both advertising and product history for an otherwise overlooked application that was widely used and revolutionized the way photographs were displayed. Item #74071
