MY NEIGHBORS: Stories of the Welsh People

New York: Harcourt, Brace and Howe, 1920. First Edition. Hardcover. First American Edition, first printing. A companion to the author's best known work, My People (1915), the short story collection often compared to Sherwood Anderson's Winesburg, Ohio and James Joyce's Dubliners. The Welsh writer Caradoc Evans (1878-1945) wished to shock the Welsh out of their complacency and smugness by contrasting the pieties of non-conformist Christianity with the brutal realities of poverty, meanness, and hypocrisy he had personally experienced. He was an important influence on the early and more surreal writing of Dylan Thomas. Octavo. Original brown cloth binding, with gilt titles. The top edge is dust stained. In the uncommon dust jacket, which is toned, more so along the spine and folds, with some minor edgewear and two tape reinforcements to the verso; otherwise very good. Very good / Very good.
