Best known for My People (1915), a short story collection often compared to Sherwood Anderson's Winesburg, Ohio and James Joyce's Dubliners, the Welsh writer Caradoc Evans (1878-1945) wished to shock the Welsh out of their complacency and smugness by contrasting the pieties of non-conformist Christianity with the brutal realities of poverty, meanness, and hypocrisy he had personally experienced. He was an important influence on the early and more surreal writing of Dylan Thomas. Small octavo. Original blue cloth binding, with dark blue titles.
