Born's important text, Aufbau der Materie, 1922. Born (1882-1970) became interested in relativity as a student. With his work on crystal lattice dynamics, he laid the foundation for solid-state physics. Among his students and colleagues at Gottingen were Fermi, Heisenberg, Karman, Pauli, Teller, and Oppenheimer. Born was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1954. From the library of Franz Sondheimer, the German-born scientist who, with Robert Burns Woodward, was the first to completely synthesize a nonaromatic steroid, with his bookplate to the front pastedown.
