Signed and numbered by Sargent Bogart on the front pastedown, with a printed acknowledgement signed by Bogart paperclipped to a prefatory leaf and a related typed letter signed (TLS) by Bogart laid in. Sold by subscription, this copy of the book belonged to Lieutenant Colonel Leon C. Garcia (1882-1955), chief surgeon of the Sixteenth Infantry, First Division, with his name stamped in gilt on the front board. According to his obituary in the St. Louis Globe-Democrat, Dr. Garcia served in the Philippines and Mexico before taking part in the Argonne fighting during the First World War: “He was credited with being the first Army medical officer in World War I to go into front line trenches with soldiers.” He was awarded the Purple Heart in May 1933.
