REPORT ON SURVEY OF FRANCE, MAY - JUNE 1922

Chicago: Chicago: Investment Bankers Association of America, 1922. First Edition. This specially printed report was produced for the 36 members of the Investment Bankers Association who took part in a two-week tour of France, which was in the midst of rebuilding from the devastation wrought by World War I. The object of the tour was to put a large number of the bond distributors in the United States in “personal touch with the present conditions and future outlook of French finance, industry, commerce and agriculture with a view to the extension of long term credits in the shape of bond issues for the American market.”

The tour was undertaken by representatives from firms in Los Angeles, Pennsylvania, New York, Michigan, Ohio, Colorado, Tennessee, Texas, Illinois, Utah, North Carolina, Massachusetts, and France. The publication includes a 13-page log of the survey that was compiled by William Ross, president of the Wm. L. Ross & Company, Inc. of Chicago. It is followed by 119 tipped-in black and white photographs of the members of the tour group and some of the locations they visited, including Schneider Plant, the coke ovens at Le Creusot. There were also some reminders of the impacts of World War I such as a German tank on the road to Rheims and temporary housing in devastated regions in Flirey.

Quarto. Bound in full limp green suede, with decorative gilt stamping and a suede tie. Accompanied by two string-bound folders with press clippings and 12 pamphlets about various economic issues in France and Europe, and housed in a two-part box. This report belonged to James R. Page, whose name is stamped in gilt on the cover. Page represented Los Angeles-based Stevens, Page & Sterling on the tour. According to a newspaper story about the report, the print run was limited as the production cost was close to $100 per volume. No copies of the report are found in the marketplace or recorded in OCLC. Item #72630
