This popular collection of verse includes the satirical poem "Plain Language from Truthful James" which first appeared in the September 1870 issue of Overland Monthly and was widely republished thereafter. The bookplate of Alfred H. Martin, brother of Kansas Governor John Alexander Martin, appears on the front pastedown, with his ink signature to the prefatory blank leaf with the clipped signature. Small octavo. Original brown cloth binding, with gilt titles and beveled edges. Some general dust staining to the top edge. The spine is darkened a touch, with some mild edgewear to the boards; otherwise very good. BAL 7256. Very good. Item #72196
